It’s official – the Skillet Lickers will be kicking off their much anticipated annual Fall Tour, easily the busiest time of the year for the group, on Friday, September 8th and Saturday, September 9th with two showings of their latest hit theatrical production, ‘Real Time Radio’, which they debuted last February in Cumming.
The two September shows will take place in familiar territory, the Canton Theater, where the Skillet Lickers have performed their first historical play (“Country Music Down Yonder”) five times in the past three years. “We’ve played there often, but we’ve gotten so much great response from the fans [in Canton], that we decided to book our latest production there, as well,” says Russ Tanner, who also hopes to bring the new theater show to other venues across the region, as well.
“Real Time Radio” is not your typical Skillet Licker concert. It combines elements of music and radio history, acting, comedy, and musical favorites from across multiple different genres performed by the Skillet Lickers, along with original Skillet Licker favorites, too. The show explores the influence of radio on the world of music through the years. “We love putting together these theater shows that help educate everyone on not only our history, but music history. By the same token, we don’t want it to be a lecture, but a fun, energetic, comedic show where everyone can sort of step back in time, have a good laugh, enjoy some great music, and learn a thing or two, as well.”
The music-dominated show carries an old-time radio show theme and gives fans a taste of country, blues, jazz, gospel, and bluegrass favorites (including some new songs you’ve never heard the Skillet Lickers perform before).
This is just the latest theatrical booking for the Skillet Lickers, who have achieved success with their first play, “Country Music Down Yonder” (which explored the Skillet Lickers’ history and influence in Country music) and “Smoke on the Mountain”, a show seen by thousands over the past two years at the Cumming Playhouse, in which the Skillet Lickers provided the music.
The show will occur on Friday night, September 8th and Saturday night, September 9th. Details on show times and ticket information will be announced shortly. Check back here for the latest details.
